Review on Probiotics—Emerging Science
Probiotics can alter the composition of the intestinal microbiota and thus can modulate aspects of adaptiveand innate immunity in children. This has resulted in using probiotics to prevent, manage or treat varioushealth conditions such as diarrhoea, allergies, dental caries and gestational diabetes among other conditions.However, the lack of uniform regulatory standards can open up avenues for marketing ineffective productswith false claims. Keeping all these in mind, there is an urgent need for a proper regulatory framework in Indiato standardise the guidelines and regulations on the use of probiotics with international standards in order toensure their safe and effective use.The Nestlé Nutrition Institute is extremely delighted to bring you review articles on probiotics. The article“Probiotics and Immunity” reviews the development of the immune system in infants and children,elaborates on the role of probiotics in the development of the gut microbiota and on aspects of the immunesystem and finally, presents clinical data on the efficacy and benefits of probiotic supplementation, particularlyin infants, pregnant and lactating women. The article “Probiotics in Paediatrics: Functional, Safetyand Regulatory Aspects” provides an outline on the safety aspect of probiotics in different populations,particularly infants and pregnant women. It also examines the regulatory framework that exists in India, USAand neighboring countries.
