Fact : Food allergy and food intolerance are different diseases associated with reactions to food. The terms “food allergy” and “food intolerance” are often confused by health care professionals and patients1 As shown in Figure 1, adverse reactions to foods are broadly classified based on the involvement of immune response.1 Food allergy is an adverse immunological reaction, which is reproducible on exposure to a particular food and does not occur during avoidance of the food. These reactions are more common in children than in adults and prevalence is found to be increasing in many countries.1
